As of the census[31]
of 2000, there were 94,911 people, 42,003 households, and 24,235
families residing in the city. The population density in 2000 was
2,213.2 people per square mile (854.6/km²). There were 45,257 housing
units at an average density of 1,055.3 per square mile (407.5/km²). The
racial makeup of the city was 69.38% White, 26.74% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.
There were 42,003 households out of which 25.5% had children under
the age of 18 living with them, 37.1% were married couples living
together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and
42.3% were non-families. 35.9% of all households were made up of
individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age
or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family
size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age
of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and
16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.
For every 100 females there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age
18 and over, there were 84.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,719, and the
median income for a family was $37,826. Males had a median income of
$28,465 versus $21,591 for females. The per capita income for the city
was $18,468. About 12.9% of families and 15.9% of the population were
below the poverty line, including 24.4% of those under age 18 and 11.3%
of those age 65 or over.
